The lines that divide the form create deep shadows that become quarter hour indices. This grid like overlay on the surface also expresses the sculptural shape of the clock, similar to contour lines on a topographical map.
An off white colour paired with simple black hands allows for intuitive reading of the time. Additionally a sweeping second hand provides a slow composed movement that tracks a moving cast shadow onto the bowl shaped clock face.
Through these carefully considered design choices the sculptural shape becomes something simple, intuitive and functional. This creates value and purpose without the need for superficial details or embellishments.
The prototype was CNC machined from Corian, and finished to a satin surface for a subtle reflectivity.
